Bunmi's Brighton Half Marathon for SayAphasia Donate Over the past year, I have been volunteering with SayAphasia at one of our support groups, spending time listening to and communicating with people living with aphasia. Week after week, I hear deeply personal stories, stories of frustration, resilience, loss, strength, isolation, being misunderstood, and most importantly about hope. Each one has helped me understand just how much effort it takes to be heard when words don’t come easily. While growing up, I had my own challenges with speaking. Because my mouth doesn’t open wide, I was often misunderstood because I couldn't speak clearly, and I had to learn how to communicate. I know this experience is not the same as living with aphasia, but it has given me a small glimpse into how isolating it can feel when your thoughts are clear but expressing them is a struggle. The people in my support group have welcomed me, encouraged me, and trusted me with their stories. They have taught me patience, compassion, and the true meaning of perseverance. I’m fundraising for everyone living with aphasia and for the incredible members of my support group — this is my way of giving back to a community that has given me so much.
