Become A Volunteer

About the charity: Say Aphasia provides support groups across the UK for people with aphasia.  Aphasia affects over 350,000 people in the UK but is little understood or known about by the public. Say Aphasia is the only aphasia charity set up by people with aphasia for people with aphasia; helping them to adapt to their new way of life and regain their independence and confidence.

Aphasia is a lifelong condition and means that the person living with aphasia, their friends, and family will need to adjust to a new way of communicating to overcome barriers. This may mean having to write or draw things or use assistive technology instead of speaking.

Position Overview:  Volunteers can assist in various roles either as a:

  • Support Group Assistant, helping to provide support for those living with aphasia.
  • PR Support Assistant, helping to promote the support groups.
  • Journalist / Storyteller, helping our group members with aphasia to tell their story.
  • Local grants fundraiser, apply to council grants.

SUPPORT GROUP ASSISTANT

Volunteering for the charity is very rewarding. As a Support Group Assistant volunteer, you can assist members in communicating with each other, contribute to organise activities or provide the tea and coffee.

The training and support you will receive means that you can take pride in learning about a hidden disability that most of society has never heard of. By giving your time to people with aphasia, you will be directly improving their quality of life. Many group members live alone or have limited social interactions, so having a regular, sociable drop-in group with others who share their experience of aphasia can greatly improve mental health and well-being.

During this experience, you may surprise yourself by learning new things about yourself and gaining insight into how people communicate and connect when speech is lost.

Who Can Volunteer: You will need to be available to attend the hours of your local drop-in group.  Information on where our drop-in groups are run can be found here: www.sayaphasia.org/groups

The charity is looking for someone who is interested in improving the quality of life for others and is willing to learn. You will need to be prepared to adapt your communication style when speaking with people with aphasia. It is essential that you have strong communication skills and a compassionate demeanour.  If you have good administration skills that would be a bonus. Being computer literate is also a bonus.

PR SUPPORT ASSISTANT

We’re looking for a creative and proactive person to help raise awareness of our support groups. Your role will be to promote these groups in the local community and online, ensuring people with aphasia and their families know where to find us and how we can support them.

This is a very rewarding role, as you will help to reach those families affected by aphasia, who may not be aware of the support available. Aphasia support is still very limited across the UK, so we want to do what we can to ensure these families are aware of Say Aphasia's support.

JOURNALIST / STORYTELLER - CLOSED UNTIL LATE 2027

Do you believe stories can change lives? Can you listen with empathy, write with heart, and give voice to those often unheard?

We're looking for a volunteer writer / journalist / storyteller to help shine a light on the lived experiences of people with aphasia.

As you can imagine, this is another highly rewarding role which enables people with aphasia to regain their voice and share their experiences.

LOCAL GRANTS FUNDRAISER

The Local Grants Fundraiser will play a key role in securing sustainable funding for Say Aphasia by identifying, applying for, and managing local council and community grant funding for each of our aphasia support groups across the UK.

    Why we exist

This charity knows first hand the confusion, frustration and change that a stroke can have on a person and their family. We know that aphasia is not only a result of a stroke, but also head injury, brain haemorrhage, or a brain tumour. That is why we are focused on supporting anyone with aphasia or similar conditions. We have many people who come regularly to our drop in groups who have aphasia, dysarthria and apraxia.
