Debby Lewis Debby Lewis - Stroke Association Support Co-ordinator, South West I was delighted to hear that Say Aphasia is setting up a group in the area I cover as a Stroke Association Support Coordinator. There is a gap in support for stroke survivors with aphasia and I will be referring clients to the new group, so they can practice vital communication skills in a safe and supportive environment. This is especially important as clients often are on a waiting list for Speech and Language therapy. I am so pleased that the sessions are free, as many stroke survivors are impacted financially as a result of a stroke. Stroke survivors of working age often have financial problems due to being unable to work. They have to wait for benefits to be awarded and this stress can impact their recovery. In my experience, peer/group support is crucial for many stroke survivors on their recovery pathway. I have good feedback from those who attend groups. Being with other’s who understand and ‘get it’ makes a difference to those navigating their stroke recovery. – Debby Lewis, Stroke Association Support Co‑ordinator, South West.
