From Peer Leader to Trustee From Stroke Survivor to Leader and Trustee: The Inspiring Journey of Jez Hodgkinson In the wake of a stroke that left his speech affected by aphasia, Jez Hodgkinson faced a life-altering challenge. Like many survivors, he encountered the isolation and frustration that come when language—the bridge to connection—seems to falter. But instead of retreating, Jez chose a powerful path forward. Turning Challenge into Purpose Finding solace and strength in Say Aphasia’s weekly Zoom support groups in 2020, Jez soon realised the profound impact of peer connection. “I decided to become a peer leader as I had enjoyed the weekly Say Aphasia Zoom calls,” he shares. Driven by a desire to bring this same community to places lacking local support, he became a peer leader, helping to start and grow the Winchester (and Southampton) group alongside others like Lloyd Brammer. A Voice Through Music and Community Jez also believes in the healing power of creative expression. At one memorable gathering, the Southampton Salty Sea Dogs performed shanties with the group as music offered a different pathway to communication. Jez reflected how, “It’s probably the only time [while singing] they can communicate what they want, whereas the rest of the time they’re isolated”. His leadership sparks not just conversation, but moments when language is reclaimed through song, laughter, and shared humanity. Stepping Up as a Trustee Now, Jez has taken his commitment even further by joining the charity’s board as a Trustee. This role empowers him to shape the future of Say Aphasia at a strategic level, ensuring that services are led by people with lived experience. His journey from survivor to decision‑maker embodies the charity’s core belief: those affected by aphasia are not just recipients—they are leaders. Jez Hodgkinson’s journey from the silence of stroke-induced aphasia, through the supportive circle of peer meetings and music, all the way to his new position as a Trustee is a profound testament to resilience, purpose, and leadership. His story shines as a true inspiration: overcoming adversity and lifting others along the way.
