Aphasia Networking

Aphasia International

The development and launch of the Association Internationale Aphasie (AIA) – Aphasia International Association, was the vision of Raymond Bassam and other people with aphasia from the Belgian Federation of Francophone Aphasics (FéBAF) supported by colleagues from aphasia organisations across Europe.

Hanka our longterm Hove member is setting off to Slovenia to meet with AIA. As a charity, we feel it is important to keep up to date with other aphasia charities around the world.

Hanka is from Berlin and before her aphasia spoke spoke fluent English, German, Spanish, French and Russian. She is passionate about raising awareness of aphasia and will be a perfect ambassador for Say Aphasia at this conference.

Following stroke her family (3 children) had to make the hard decision to move back to England in 2015. She spent 3 months in a hospital in Spain, and 3 month in Haywards Heath hospital. The first year after her stroke, she was in a wheelchair and couldn't speak any of her languages. Hanka felt that her whole livelihood and lifelong passion was suddenly gone because of aphasia. After years of practice and perseverance, she can now speak English, German and a little Spanish and she is always improving.
